Campaign 68, Skirmish 1 | September 11, 2026

Read the latest from the Harrisburg Civil War Round Table in our September edition. Inside you'll find:

Campaign 68 Opens: Our 68th campaign year kicks off Friday, September 11, with prolific author, cartographer, and battlefield guide Dr. Bradley M. Gottfried on his latest book, Grant & Meade: An Uneasy Alliance — the complex partnership between Ulysses S. Grant and George G. Meade, and how the proud Meade handled Grant's growing influence over the Army of the Potomac. Doors open at 5:30 pm at the Central Penn College Conference Center; dinner is $35 per person, with reservations due to Michael Margolius by noon on Sunday, August 30. Can't join us in person? The lecture and Q&A stream on Zoom — please join by 7:00 pm.

President's Pen: Rev. Rebecca S. Myers reflects on a lesson that runs through both our September program and her own service as chaplain to the all-volunteer Citizens Fire Company in Newport: the great achievements of history rarely come from one person alone, but from people who find common purpose across differences in personality and perspective. That's what the Round Table does at its best—gathering around a shared interest, learning from one another, and building friendships.

Don't Delay — Fall Field Trip to Manassas: On Saturday, October 24, we travel to Manassas, Virginia for War is No Picnic: The First Battle of Bull Run, guided by Dr. Bradley M. Gottfried, author of The Maps of First Bull Run. Cost is $95 per person, and the only way to reserve a seat is to contact Field Trip Reservationist Steve Williamson directly at 717-580-0443 or steve.williamson.WCCS@outlook.com and pay a $25 deposit. We expect this trip to fill quickly — sign up today.

Plus: A recap of the HCWRT's well-attended recruiting table at the Army War College Welcome Expo at Carlisle Barracks — and a call for volunteers to staff our table at the Army Expo at USAHEC on September 12 & 13; a full roundup of regional Civil War events through mid-September; a traffic advisory on PennDOT road construction affecting routes to Central Penn College; and membership information.
