About the event

As we prepare to commemorate Memorial Day, please join us on Friday, May 7, as author and historian Dr. Allison S. Finkelstein recounts the Civil War origins of Arlington National Cemetery.

In May of 1864, in the midst of the bloody Overland Campaign, the US Army started to bury the war dead on its occupied land at Arlington Plantation. Prompted out of necessity and begun with no ceremony, that action unintentionally ignited a process that forever changed American military commemoration. In this presentation, Dr. Finkelstein will trace the origins and creation of Arlington National Cemetery (ANC). By contextualizing Arlington’s establishment within the development of the Civil War-era national cemetery system, her remarks will underscore Arlington’s eventual significance to the larger nation, its role in the creation of Memorial Day, and the ways in which the Civil War lives on in American commemorative traditions.
