The Mule in the Civil War: A Legendary Service
Join us for an extraordinary presentation by John S. Heiser, retired historian from Gettysburg National Military Park, as he explores the indispensable role of the mule in the American Civil War. In any war, there are heroes and villains, the brave and the cowardly—and the mule embodied all of these characteristics that neither army could do without.
Heiser, who served for over 40 years at Gettysburg NMP and rose to Historian in the Division of Interpretation and Visitor Services, is renowned for his riveting presentations that have attracted hundreds of loyal followers. This encore performance of his final pre-retirement lecture—originally delivered to a packed house in January 2020—examines how this remarkable animal's legendary service extended well beyond 1865.
