Join us Friday, September 11, as we open our 68th campaign year with prolific author, cartographer, and battlefield guide Dr. Bradley M. Gottfried, exploring the "uneasy alliance" between Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant and Major General George G. Meade.
Their relationship was a complicated one. Meade was the first commander of the Army of the Potomac to best Robert E. Lee in battle — yet in April 1864 he found himself welcoming a new General-in-Chief. Unlike his predecessors, Grant traveled with Meade's army and often pitched his tent close to Meade's own. Despite periodic friction, the two forged the working partnership that finally subdued Lee. How the proud Meade navigated Grant's growing influence over his army is the subject of this presentation.
About the speaker: Dr. Gottfried earned his Ph.D. in zoology in 1976 and spent 40 years at seven colleges, retiring in 2017 as President of the College of Southern…
