Civil War chaplains were far more than religious officers—they served as confidants, spiritual guides, and paternal figures who willingly shared the hardships of army life alongside their men. Many risked their lives and freedom out of duty to God and their regiments, performing tasks that extended well beyond traditional pastoral care.
Through firsthand chaplain accounts, some never before published, we gain a unique perspective on the spiritual and moral dimensions of soldier life before, during, and after battle.
